The Magician: Power, Purpose, and the Shaman Within

The Magician has always been my favourite tarot card. In the traditional Rider-Waite deck, it stands for manifestation, willpower, and the ability to channel unseen energy into concrete reality. One hand points to the sky, the other to the earth—“as above, so below.” On the table lie the four suits of the tarot: sword, cup, wand, pentacle. Tools for mastery. This figure is confident, centered, and capable. The Magician doesn’t wait for life to happen. He makes things happen.
But for Lieselle's Eternal Deck, I wanted to go Deeper
In my deck, the Magician becomes the Shaman. He still holds the same core energy—creation, mastery, transformation—but with a shift in tone. The Shaman isn't just manifesting for himself. He's a bridge between worlds, a healer, someone who transforms not just his reality but helps others do the same.
At the centre of the card is the Ouroboros, the serpent eating its own tail—a symbol of eternal cycles. This reflects the Shaman’s role in guiding people through transformation, healing, death and rebirth, over and over again.
The classic four elements are still here—Cups, Pentacles, Swords, and Wands—but in this context, they’re not just tools. They’re sacred forces the Shaman works with to bring balance and intention into the world.
Roses and lilies appear, too. The rose symbolizes love, the heart behind all healing. The lilies speak to purpose—the clarity that comes when you’re walking your path and helping others find theirs.
And then there’s the river, always moving, always reshaping the land. It’s a symbol of manifestation in motion. Just like the river shapes the land over time, the Shaman shapes reality—slowly, steadily, with presence.
What are you using your Power for?
In a reading, this card is still about action, skill, and potential. But it also asks: What are you using your power for? Are you acting in alignment with your higher purpose? Are you healing or just hustling? Are you creating from love or from ego?
For me, the Magician—and the Shaman—remind us that real power is never just about control--it is about connection to ourselves, to others, and to something greater.
