The High Priestess: Behind the Veil

tarot card meanings the high priestess May 13, 2025

The High Priestess is that mysterious, all-knowing figure in the tarot deck who’s basically saying, “Shhh, the real magic is happening behind the scenes.” She’s the keeper of secrets, the bridge between what we see and what we feel, the guide to the stuff we can’t quite put our finger on.

But what happens when we look at her through different decks? Today, I want to take a stroll through the classic Rider-Waite High Priestess and a fresh, contemporary take from my new deck: Lieselle’s Eternal Deck.

Let’s dig into the symbols, the subtle shifts, and what it all really means when this card pops up.

The Moon: Phases & Mystery

In the Rider-Waite deck, a crescent moon chills at her feet, symbolising intuition’s ebb and flow. It’s a reminder that what we know is never a straight line—it’s a cycle. Some things are illuminated, some things are in shadow.

We decided that in our deck, the moon would be both waxing and waning, showing us the full cycle. It’s not just about the big aha moments; it’s about the bits and pieces we collect along the way—the things we notice, the things we forget, and the things that come back around when we least expect them.

Ever feel like your intuition comes and goes in waves? Yeah, that’s this card in a nutshell.

The Stained-Glass Window: Beyond the Veil

The Rider-Waite High Priestess sits in front of a simple, blank veil. It’s a hard stop—what’s behind it is a mystery.

It was an inspirational moment of Sean's to add a stained-glass window, filtering light in fragmented colours. It’s not about keeping you out—it’s about showing you that what’s hidden is still visible, just in a different way. Think of it as life’s little clues, scattered like breadcrumbs, waiting for you to notice. Also think of it as a unique filter...or the way that we sometimes only see part of the truth and that the truth we see may be coloured by our own experiences and perspectives.

Final Thoughts: Which High Priestess Guides You?

Rider-Waite’s High Priestess is that classic, all-knowing vibe—the gatekeeper, the silent guardian of everything we’re not quite ready to know yet. In my version, I would like you to consider that she is you and say, “Hey, what are the answers you’re looking for? They’re already here. You just have to look a little closer.”

So, which one feels more like your vibe? The classic keeper of secrets or the modern-day guide who nudges you to look within? And if she handed you her scroll, what would it say? Maybe it’s not some ancient cosmic secret. Maybe it’s a simple reminder: Trust what you already know.

Have you ever had a High Priestess moment, when something just clicked and you realised you already had the answer all along? I bet you have! Trust that more...
